Linda Perry Reveals She Nearly Rejected Christina Aguilera for "Beautiful," Recalls Initial Doubts

Linda Perry wasn't immediately convinced that Christina Aguilera should be the voice behind "Beautiful."
During an appearance on the Zach Sang Show, the songwriter discussed her first impressions of Aguilera and the journey that led to one of the most iconic collaborations in pop music history. When the "Genie in a Bottle" singer first heard a demo of the track, she wanted to record it—but Perry wasn't ready to hand it over.
"No, you're like, a hot chick. I'm not giving you this song. No way. Are you kidding me?" Perry recalled thinking at the time.
That perspective shifted after Perry's manager encouraged her to reconsider. What came next changed everything. "It made sense," Perry shared. "That's when I discovered, oh, beautiful people are actually insecure and just as damaged as I am."
The 61-year-old record producer elaborated on that realization: "She's just as f–ked up as I am. Okay. And then it broke the ice between the both of us when I saw that."
One of Perry's most significant decisions involved insisting that Aguilera use the original demo rather than re-record the track. The raw, unpolished quality of that initial recording became central to the song's power and message.
"That's the version that sold me [and] made me believe she had emotions. That she was insecure, that she was lacking in confidence in certain places, that she needed acceptance and approval," Perry explained. She continued, "I said, 'Christina, what is wonderful about this vocal is you didn't know what you were doing. That's why it's going to be huge, because so many people are going to relate to this imperfect vocal. That's what this song is about. Not being perfect. I think that's an art that needs to come back.'"
Aguilera ultimately included the track on her 2002 album Stripped. The song went on to earn her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004.
