Lisa Kudrow Opens Up About Difficult Writers' Room Dynamics on 'Friends'

April 27, 2026

Lisa Kudrow is speaking candidly about what went on behind the scenes during the production of Friends.

The 62-year-old, who played Phoebe Buffay throughout the show's celebrated run on NBC, recently disclosed that certain members of the writing staff exhibited troubling behavior toward the cast.

In an interview with the Times of London, Kudrow described a tense atmosphere in the writers' room. "There was definitely mean stuff going on behind the scenes," she explained. "Don't forget we were recording in front of a live audience of 400, and if you messed up one of these writers' lines or it didn't get the perfect response they could be like, 'Can't the bitch f-king read? She's not even trying. She f-ked up my line.'"

The actress also addressed inappropriate conduct from male writers. "The guys would be up late discussing their sexual fantasies about Jennifer [Aniston] and Courteney [Cox]. It was intense," Kudrow said.

Despite acknowledging the harsh environment, Kudrow offered perspective on the situation. "Oh, it could be brutal, but these guys — and it was mostly men in there — were sitting up until 3 a.m. trying to write the show so my attitude was, 'Say what you like about me behind my back because then it doesn't matter,'" she reflected.

Kudrow's comments shed light on workplace dynamics that were common in television production during that era. Her current role in The Comeback has explored similar themes, with her character Valerie Cherish navigating challenging interactions with writers throughout the series, drawing parallels to real-world industry experiences.
