Lizzo Pushes Back Against Claims She's Been Critical of Taylor Swift

Lizzo has set the record straight after a social media exchange prompted accusations that she has been disparaging toward Taylor Swift.
The 38-year-old artist returned to Twitter/X recently and used the platform to address the claims head-on. On Friday, May 22, Lizzo responded to a tweet that compared streaming and sales figures for her My Face Hurts from Smiling mixtape and Taylor's The Life of a Showgirl album—which combined totaled over 4 million—against Drake's three new albums, which garnered nearly 700k.
When Lizzo asked for clarification on what the comparison meant, a user replied that the numbers reflected how "all that sh-t talking you did about Tay finally caught up to you."
Lizzo's response was direct. She quote tweeted the comment, writing: "Are you well? First of all I have never talked sh-t about Taylor Swift— also while we on the subject I've never talked sh-t about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name does not mean I'm talking shit— grow tf up pls"
The rapper and singer has a documented history of actually praising Taylor. In 2022, during an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show, Lizzo joked about their similarities as songwriters. "I'm Black Taylor Swift," she said. "I really am, I'm trifling."
Lizzo elaborated on her songwriting approach, noting that she draws from personal experiences much like Taylor does. "I don't talk too badly about [an ex's] character, it's just what he do," she explained. "I'll be like, 'He's a good person, but this is what he did. Am I tripping?' They'd be like, 'You're not tripping, you're not tripping.'"
The comments come as Lizzo has recently announced a new album and shared insight into its provocative title, "B-tch."
