Luigi Mangione's Legal Fund Tops $1.5 Million With $28K Birthday Gift

Luigi Mangione is drawing substantial financial backing as he navigates ongoing legal proceedings from a federal prison cell.
The man charged in connection with the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson marked his 28th birthday on Wednesday, May 6, with a significant contribution to his defense fund. A GoFundMe donor identified as Carl contributed $28,038 in honor of the occasion.
The donation included a note explaining the contribution: "Funding was also directed toward victims in comparable situations. Though, it is unfortunate that private support is needed here because of jurisdictional piling and otherwise abnormal mishandling."
The influx of support has pushed Mangione's legal fund past the $1.5 million threshold.
Mangione stands accused of fatally shooting the UnitedHealthcare executive with a handgun in 2024, allegedly driven by grievances related to the American insurance system. He has maintained a not guilty plea across both cases filed against him—a state trial scheduled to commence in September 2026 and a federal proceeding slated for early 2027.
During recent court appearances, Mangione has drawn notice for his courtroom conduct, including an outburst and a gesture made during a December hearing that captured public attention.
Following his apprehension, Mangione's written manifesto explaining his alleged motivations became public knowledge.
In a recent development, it was disclosed that capital punishment has been taken off the table in his case.
