Luigi Mangione Wins Partial Court Victory as Evidence Suppression Hearing Unfolds

Luigi Mangione faced Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, May 18, as Judge Gregory Carro weighed arguments over evidence seized during his arrest in connection with the fatal 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The 28-year-old defendant's legal team challenged the collection of items found during searches following his arrest at a Pennsylvania McDonald's location. The judge's ruling proved mixed for both sides of the case.
Carro determined that prosecutors may present a firearm and a notebook described as a "manifesto" during trial, finding those items were lawfully obtained. The prosecution successfully defended their admissibility despite defense objections that the seizure was improper.
The ruling shifted when examining other materials recovered from Mangione's backpack at the point of arrest. The judge found that officers conducted an "improper warrantless search" in the presence of the public and store patrons. Items deemed inadmissible under this ruling include a loaded magazine, mobile phone, passport, wallet, and computer chip.
A subsequent search of the backpack at Altoona police headquarters received judicial approval as "valid," which means the silencer and notebook obtained during that search remain admissible evidence.
Mangione has entered not guilty pleas to nine state felony charges, among them second-degree murder and weapons possession offenses. A conviction on these charges carries potential life imprisonment.
Separate federal charges charging stalking have also drawn not guilty pleas from the defendant. Those two stalking counts each carry maximum sentences of life without parole.
The state trial is scheduled to commence in September, with a federal trial following later that autumn. Since December 2024, Mangione has remained incarcerated at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The defendant recently marked his 28th birthday while imprisoned and received a $28,000 contribution to his legal defense fund around the same time.
