Luigi Mangione's Federal Trial Pushed to January 2027

Luigi Mangione appeared in court Monday to receive an update on his federal case proceedings. The 28-year-old defendant, who remains in custody ahead of both state and federal trials, learned that his federal trial will commence in January 2027 rather than the previously planned November start date.

Judge Garnett cited jury selection considerations as the reason for the delay. Jury selection is now scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027, with approximately 40 to 50 prospective jurors expected to be called before a full panel is seated. Opening arguments are slated for January 25.

Mangione faces multiple federal charges stemming from the December 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. While prosecutors initially pursued capital charges, a federal judge dismissed the death penalty counts. He has maintained a not guilty plea to all charges.

In state court, separate proceedings continue with charges of second-degree murder and weapons violations. That trial is scheduled for September 8.

Mangione's defense team has been developing a strategy centered on his mental and emotional condition. The defendant recently turned 28 while incarcerated and received a $28,000 contribution to his legal defense fund around the same time.
