Lupita Nyong'o Set to Play Dual Roles in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Christopher Nolan has unveiled the specific roles that Lupita Nyong'o will take on in his forthcoming epic film The Odyssey.
The 43-year-old Oscar-winning actress, who joined the project's ensemble cast previously, will play Helen of Troy—a part that had been subject to speculation before Nolan's confirmation. In a notable creative decision, she'll also inhabit a second character in the adaptation.
Time magazine confirmed the casting details in a profile published Tuesday, May 12, describing the choices as among "several striking adaptation choices" for the film.
According to the outlet, Nolan's approach to the story brings fresh complexity to familiar material. "The reunion between Odysseus' fellow king Menelaus (Jon Bernthal) and his wife Helen (Lupita Nyong'o) — the most beautiful woman in the world, blamed for starting the war after a Trojan prince spirited her away — has always felt too neatly resolved in the poem. Nolan complicates it," the profile stated.
Beyond Helen, Nyong'o is also cast as Clytemnestra, Helen's sister, who becomes Agamemnon's wife before he embarks on leading the Greeks into war.
The ensemble cast features Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, the hero navigating his journey home following the Trojan War. The production also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Elliot Page, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and John Leguizamo.
A fresh trailer for The Odyssey dropped recently, building anticipation for the film's theatrical debut on July 17, 2026.
