John Early's Directorial Debut: 'Maddie's Secret' Trailer Drops

The highly anticipated trailer for John Early's freshman directorial effort has arrived.

The 38-year-old performer and comedian takes on a triple role in the dark comedy Maddie's Secret, stepping in front of and behind the camera as both writer and director. The supporting ensemble includes Kate Berlant, Eric Rahill, Claudia O'Doherty, Conner O'Malley, Vanessa Bayer, Chris Bauer, and Kristen Johnston.

Early plays the title character, a resourceful dishwasher who catapults to internet fame at a trendy food content creation company. Though her world appears idyllic—complete with a devoted spouse (Rahill), loyal best friend (Berlant), and a well-stocked pantry of ethically-sourced, woman-owned chili crisp—professional mounting tensions trigger the resurfacing of a buried trauma from her past. The film blends satire with melodrama, executing sharp tonal shifts anchored by compelling character work that announces a distinctive new creative voice.

When discussing his directorial approach with IndieWire, Early emphasized the importance of meticulous planning. "The biggest thing I learned was just the only way for me, I'm not Terrence Malick. I can't like be, 'Let's f–king roam around and get beautiful shots,'" he explained. "I really was like, 'The only way is preparation and coming in with a plan.' Especially at the budget level we were working, if you didn't have a plan, it all fell apart. I'm very proud of its visual directness, and I say this with love, the dumbness. There were moments where we were trying to do more elevated camera work. And then I was like, 'I'm sorry. It's just going to be her POV. And I'm going to make the actors look directly into the camera. I'm sorry.'"

Maddie's Secret hits theaters in New York on June 19, followed by a Los Angeles release on June 29, with additional markets to come.
