Madonna Discusses Her Surrealist-Inspired Met Gala 2026 Look

Madonna has shed light on the conceptual thinking behind her striking ensemble at the 2026 Met Gala, speaking with Vogue about the artistic foundations of her look.
The 67-year-old icon drew inspiration from surrealist painter Leonora Carrington's reimagining of the story of St. Anthony the Great for her May 4 appearance. "His whole story is about the struggle of the soul. And Leonora… she saw it as the struggle of women and feminine divinity," Madonna explained.
The carefully considered details of her outfit each carried symbolic weight. "She has a ship on her head, symbolizing the journey of the soul; the horn, symbolizing the unification of music; and then the seven women around her represent the mystical number seven," the pop legend noted.
Her ensemble came together through a high-fashion collaboration: a Saint Laurent satin and lace slip dress paired with a translucent violet organza cape, leather platform boots, and a Philip Treacy hat. The hat itself held historical significance—it once belonged to fashion editor Isabella Blow and was something Michael Jackson had previously sought to purchase for $25,000.
"There's something very exciting about Madonna wearing a ship hat to the Met Ball. I think Isabella would be thrilled. Isabella is going to The Met, in spirit, on Madonna's head," Treacy shared with the publication.
The beauty component was equally intentional. Makeup artist Marcelo Gutierrez crafted a look that complemented rather than competed with the gown's aesthetic. "The outfit designed by Saint Laurent is incredibly ephemeral, cinematic, and monochromatic. So for the beauty, we really wanted to focus on keeping the color palette very cool-toned. Our goal was to create a look that felt both architecturally defined and soft—an editorial statement that complemented her gown without overwhelming it," he said.
Using KIKO Cosmetics, Gutierrez pursued a restrained approach with an edge. "The direction was intentionally more stripped back: ephemeral, slightly witchy, yet elevated to meet the level of high glamour required for the red carpet. The element I love the most is the subtle pop of silver shimmer on the lid. It feels both fierce and intentional—a little peekaboo of drama," he explained.
Looking ahead, Madonna is gearing up for new music. Her album "Confessions II" arrives July 3, following the recent release of her lead single "Bring Your Love," which features Sabrina Carpenter.
