Married at First Sight UK Under Investigation Following Allegations of Sexual Assault

A BBC Panorama investigation has brought serious allegations to light involving the reality dating series Married at First Sight UK. Three women who participated in the Channel 4 program have come forward claiming sexual misconduct by their former on-screen partners, with two specifically alleging rape during the filming process. A third participant reported experiencing a non-consensual sexual act.

The documentary, titled The Dark Side of Married at First Sight, premiered on Monday evening and features interviews conducted by Panorama's Noor Nanji. All three women contend that the show's welfare measures fell short in protecting them from harm.

In response to the investigation, Channel 4 has made the decision to remove all prior seasons of MAFS UK from both its streaming platforms and linear television services. The network has also taken down the show's official social media channels. The accused men have denied the allegations made against them.

Channel 4 and CPL, the independent production company behind the series, maintain that their welfare protocols are thorough and effective.

The network has announced that in April it commissioned an external review into contributor welfare on the program. The review, which is currently underway, comprises two components. Law firm Clyde & Co is examining the welfare procedures that were in place when the allegations emerged, as well as how Channel 4 and CPL responded to these concerns. Additionally, former BBC One Controller Lorraine Heggessey, an experienced media executive and advocate for rigorous welfare standards, has been engaged to assess whether further enhancements to current protocols are warranted.

Channel 4's recently appointed Chief Executive Priya Dogra issued a statement expressing sympathy for contributors who experienced distress. She noted that while the network acted promptly and appropriately when welfare concerns were raised based on available information, the external review represents an opportunity to examine the handling of these matters and determine if improvements can be made to strengthen contributor protections.

Dogra emphasized that the wellbeing of participants remains paramount and that Channel 4 is committed to maintaining industry-leading standards for contributor care. The review is expected to report in the coming months, with findings and recommendations to follow.

The show, which pairs strangers who meet for the first time on their wedding day before cameras document their relationship, operates under what Channel 4 describes as comprehensive welfare protocols, including background checks, a code of conduct, daily check-ins with a specialist welfare team, and access to additional support before, during, and after production.
