Martin Short Opens Up About Daughter Katherine's Death, Reflecting on Late Wife Nancy's Final Words

Martin Short is sharing intimate details about two devastating losses in his life, revealing striking parallels between his late wife's final moments and his daughter's death.
Nancy Short passed away in 2010 from ovarian cancer. In her final moments, as paramedics entered the room, she spoke words that would later echo in Martin's memory: "Martin, let me go."
Earlier this year, Katherine Short, the actor's daughter, died by suicide at age 42 after struggling with mental illness. In a recent conversation with The New York Times, Martin reflected on how Katherine expressed similar sentiments before her death, telling her father: "Dad, let me go."
The "Only Murders in the Building" star drew a meaningful comparison between the two tragedies, emphasizing that both illness and disease can be equally devastating. "I don't see any difference between mental illness as a disease and cancer as a disease," he explained. "In some cases, both are terminal. And in some cases, both are survivable."
While acknowledging the similarities, Martin also recognized what set these losses apart. "This is your child," he noted, underscoring the unique pain of losing a daughter.
Despite the weight of these experiences, Martin expressed a sense of forward momentum. "I am trying to head toward the light," he shared.
The actor also appeared on CBS Sunday Morning recently to discuss these deeply personal matters further.
