Melissa Barrera isn't mincing words about her departure from the Scream franchise and the state of its latest chapter.

The 35-year-old actress, who was let go from the series following social media posts she shared regarding Palestine that were characterized as antisemitic, opened up about the situation during an interview with Variety.

Currently performing in the Broadway musical Titanique, Barrera highlighted a particular moment in the show that references the classic horror film. The production includes the line "Do you wanna die, Sidney?" — a nod to Scream's iconic protagonist.

"That line was already written into the show, but it lands differently for me now," Barrera explained. "It's funny because it's aimed directly at me."

When asked whether performing in the musical felt like a way of reclaiming her connection to Scream, she reflected on her time with the franchise. "In some ways, yes. The truth is Scream will always be meaningful to me because I spent two years working on it, and it opened doors for me. I'm particularly grateful to directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for bringing me on board. That experience hasn't been tainted for me. They don't have that power over my memories."

Regarding the recent seventh film, when interviewer Marlow Stern mentioned that Scream 7 "sucked," Barrera agreed without hesitation. "I know," she said, adding her skepticism about the film's financial performance. "I also suspect they overstated the box office numbers. I don't believe it earned what they claimed."

Despite her exit, Barrera noted that audiences continue to connect with her Scream work. "Every night at the stage door, people ask me to sign Scream merchandise. Fans who discovered me through those films are coming to see my Broadway show. That connection is something nobody can take away from me."

The conversation shifted to the involvement of legacy cast members in the seventh installment. Neve Campbell returned as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox reprised her role as Gale Weathers, and the "Core Four" cast members Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding returned as well. Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and David Arquette also appeared in the film.

When asked if the returning actors' participation felt analogous to crossing a picket line, Barrera was direct. "Absolutely. Every single one of them is doing exactly that. They'll have to come to terms with that decision. The studio could only get that movie made by leaning heavily on nostalgia and recognizable faces."

Barrera went on to reflect on the broader implications of her situation. "When you take a stand for something you believe is right and then face serious consequences for it, it's psychologically damaging," she said. "I kept thinking, 'I'm speaking out against something genuinely harmful and wrong, and I'm the one being punished. I lost everything. What am I supposed to learn from this?' I even found myself questioning faith itself. I couldn't comprehend why those trying to do what's right suffer while others who remain indifferent seem to advance. I didn't understand the logic. It was a harsh reality check."
