Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler to Lead Reimagined 'Miami Vice '85' Film

April 21, 2026

The Miami Vice movie featuring Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and Oscar nominee Austin Butler has taken its next step forward, with an official title and release date now locked in.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film will be called Miami Vice '85. Jordan is set to play Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, the role originally brought to life by Philip Michael Thomas in the 1980s television series and later by Jamie Foxx in 2006's Miami Vice feature. Butler will take on the part of Sonny Crockett, first portrayed by Don Johnson on the small screen and then by Colin Farrell in the earlier film adaptation.

The new project draws inspiration from the pilot episode of the original TV series and will explore the allure and moral compromises of mid-1980s Miami through a contemporary lens. Universal Pictures will distribute the film when it arrives in theaters on May 19, 2028.

The production carries an IMAX-specific format, marking a significant technical choice for the crime drama. Kosinski, who also serves as producer, has enlisted screenwriter Dan Gilroy to craft the script. Gilroy's credits include Kong: Skull Island, Nightcrawler, The Bourne Legacy, and multiple episodes of the series Andor.

Dylan Clark and his production company Dylan Clark Productions are attached as producers. The company recently worked on The Batman and The Penguin.
