Michael Jackson Biopic Surpasses $700 Million Worldwide, Chasing Record for Music Biopics

The Michael Jackson biopic continues its impressive commercial run, crossing the $700 million threshold at the global box office and reclaiming the international top spot.
The film pulled in more than $57 million internationally during its fourth weekend, bringing its worldwide total to over $703 million. The breakdown shows $421 million from overseas markets and $282 million from domestic audiences.
Japan represents a notable gap in these figures, with the film not arriving there until June 12, suggesting additional revenue could still be added to the tally.
At its current pace, Michael could potentially overtake Bohemian Rhapsody's $911 million record to become the highest-grossing music biopic in cinema history. The film has already comfortably surpassed Elvis, the third-highest earner in the category, which accumulated over $288 million globally in 2022.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael opened in theaters on April 24 and features a cast including Jaafar Jackson, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
The film chronicles Jackson's ascent from his early years with the Jackson Five through his evolution into a solo superstar, exploring both his personal journey and signature performances from his solo career.
The project has proven divisive among critics and audiences, with professional reviewers offering largely negative assessments while audiences have embraced the film at the box office.
