Mike Vrabel Addresses Controversy in First Public Statement, References Conversations with Family and Team
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel stepped before the media Tuesday to publicly address the controversy that has dominated recent headlines.
The 50-year-old former NFL player and the sportswriter were photographed together at an Arizona resort. Both have maintained they had no romantic relationship, despite each being married. Russini subsequently stepped down from her position at The Athletic.
Without naming Russini directly, Vrabel acknowledged the situation and its impact. He began his remarks by expressing gratitude for the patience extended to him during this period.
"I've had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive," Vrabel told assembled reporters. "We believe that in order to be successful on and off the field you have to make good decisions. That includes me, that starts with me."
He emphasized his commitment to preventing any negative fallout from affecting the team's performance. "We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction," he stated.
Vrabel noted he had already spoken with his players about the matter on Monday, keeping those discussions internal. "Those are comments and questions that I've answered for the team and with the team and we'll keep those private and to ourselves," he said.
Looking forward, the head coach pledged his full dedication to the organization. "I care deeply about this football team and I'm excited to coach them. I also know that I'm going to attack each day with humility and focus," he continued. "And what I can promise you is that my family, this organization, the team, the staff, the coaches, everybody, our fans most importantly will get the best version of me going forward."
