New Mother Questions Whether She Upset In-Laws With Baby Name Choice

A woman in her late twenties is wrestling with whether she made the right call when it comes to how she and her husband named their newborn son.

The new mother took to Reddit's "Am I the A–hole" forum to detail a family situation that has left her questioning herself. She and her husband recently welcomed their second child—a baby boy—and the name they chose has created tension with her in-laws.

The backstory runs deeper than just the new arrival. When their first son was born three years ago, the couple decided against following a family tradition. Her husband shares a name with his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, but the pair opted for what she described as a "cute generic name" instead. The father-in-law had stated it was their choice whether to continue the naming custom, yet he reacted poorly when they chose not to.

The family rift that followed was significant. The in-laws became upset, began distancing themselves from their older grandson, and even started spreading rumors questioning the child's paternity. The husband, for his part, doesn't even use his full name in daily life, preferring a nickname instead.

When it came time to name their second son, the couple had a different inspiration in mind. A close family friend—someone who has been pivotal in the husband's career and whose family has become deeply woven into their lives—was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. The parents felt a strong connection to this man and his family, noting that their children play together regularly.

"When we found out we were having another boy and were tossing around names, a variation of this man's name came up," the mother explained. "We both loved it. It's old fashioned but still unique without being weird."

When the in-laws visited to meet the newborn, they asked about the name's origin. The mother and her husband explained their reasoning: they liked the name itself and wanted to honor someone who had been instrumental in their lives.

The reaction was notably cold. The father-in-law grew quiet and left the room.

The new mother began second-guessing the decision. She worried that by naming their second son after their family friend rather than continuing the family name tradition, they had inadvertently delivered an insult to her father-in-law.

Reddit commenters largely rallied to her defense. One user argued that the in-laws' behavior over the first child's name proved the couple had made the right call.

"Their response to the naming of your first child proves that you did right by NOT naming your child after an entitled, selfish, and self-centered person," the commenter wrote. "As a grandfather, your FIL should be PROUD he has a fucking grandchild, period."

The same user criticized the father-in-law's conduct as narcissistic and childish, questioning whether he understood how he was making the situation about himself rather than celebrating his grandchildren.

"I hope your husband eventually sees what shit parents he has," they concluded.

While many agreed the in-laws' behavior was inappropriate, some offered a slightly different perspective. One commenter suggested the couple could have simply said they liked the name without explaining the tribute, noting that doing so would have spared them unnecessary conflict.

Others went further, arguing that based on the in-laws' track record, the parents wouldn't have been wrong to deliberately choose a name that distanced themselves from the family tradition.
