Naomi Watts Set to Play Margot Fonteyn in Romantic Drama 'Margot & Rudi'
Naomi Watts is stepping into a leading role in an upcoming romantic drama centered on one of ballet's greatest icons.
The 57-year-old actress has been cast as Margot Fonteyn in the film Margot & Rudi. Director Anthony Fabian, known for Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, is helming the project, with WestEnd Films handling sales ahead of the May 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
The narrative centers on Fonteyn at age 42, when she believes her career as the West's greatest ballerina may be winding down. Enter Rudolf Nureyev, a 23-year-old defector from the Soviet Union whose rebellious spirit and magnetic presence reshape her artistic life. Their partnership becomes defining of the Swinging Sixties, though their connection is tested by Fonteyn's marriage and Nureyev's involvement with another dancer. The two ultimately pursue one defining ballet as the only space where they can fully be together.
Watts brings personal experience to the role—she trained in dance before transitioning to acting. "Dance was my first love, and I've long dreamed of making a dance film. I feel deeply honored and excited to be playing Margot Fonteyn, one of the greatest dancers of all time," she said in a statement. "Her relationship with Rudolf Nureyev was extraordinary — both artistically and emotionally — and I'm thrilled to be exploring it with such sensitivity and imagination under the direction of Anthony Fabian."
Hamburg Ballet principal dancer Alexandr Trush will take on the role of Nureyev. The supporting cast includes Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, and Harriet Walter.
Production is scheduled to commence in October.
