The cause of NASCAR driver Kyle Busch's death has been made public. The 41-year-old racing driver passed away on Thursday, May 21, following what was initially described as a "severe illness."

Details emerged on Saturday, May 23, when Dakota Hunter, vice president of Kyle Busch Companies, provided a statement to ESPN explaining the medical circumstances. Busch died from severe pneumonia that advanced into sepsis, according to the family's medical evaluation.

"The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications," the statement from the Busch family said. "The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."

The family received the medical evaluation that morning.

In the hours leading up to his death, Busch experienced a health crisis. On the day before he passed, sources indicated he lost consciousness while using a racing simulator for testing purposes.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, and details from the 911 call paint a picture of his deteriorating condition. The caller informed the operator that Busch was experiencing shortness of breath, had an elevated body temperature, felt faint, and was coughing up blood.

When asked by the emergency responder whether Busch was conscious, the caller confirmed he was awake but currently on the bathroom floor. The caller requested that emergency responders silence their sirens upon arrival and arranged to meet them at a side entrance to the facility.

Busch had made a public appearance just days prior at a racing event. His most recent social media post was a heartfelt message dedicated to his son.

Thoughts and condolences continue to extend to Busch's family and loved ones.
