Ncuti Gatwa Takes Aim at Doctor Who Viewership During SNL UK Hosting Gig

Ncuti Gatwa didn't shy away from ribbing the viewership numbers for Doctor Who during his time in the lead role.
The 33-year-old former Sex Education star took the stage as host for Saturday Night Live U.K.'s season finale on May 16, using his monologue to make light of the relatively modest audience figures for the recent seasons of the beloved sci-fi show. His commentary zeroed in on the season 15 finale, which concluded with his Doctor transforming into Billie Piper—the actress known for her iconic portrayal of companion Rose Tyler between 2005 and 2006, with guest appearances in 2008 and 2010.
"I've had so many fantastic roles in my career. Millions of you watched me as Eric in Sex Education, and then about 12 of you watched me in Doctor Who. Maybe that's why I kept crying," Gatwa delivered to the audience.
He then pivoted to a more heartfelt tone, reflecting on the experience. "Joking aside, it was genuinely a magical role. In fact, it was the first time my parents were truly proud of my career. When I told them I got the part, they said, 'Finally, a doctor in the family.' Even though I have since regenerated into Billie Piper," he said with a pause for laughs. "I don't understand it either … I still love Doctor Who, and I got to meet so many crazy characters, sort of a bit like this place."
