Nicki Minaj Opens Up About Jay-Z Tensions and Her Concerns Regarding Obama's Political Influence

Nicki Minaj is weighing in on her complicated relationship with Jay-Z and his close ties to former President Barack Obama.
During a recent interview, the 43-year-old artist elaborated on her shift in political allegiances, offering new perspective on her disappointment with Obama and her views on the music industry's power dynamics.
The rapper expressed her frustration with what she calls "the expectation that Black entertainers would reflexively vote Democratic," noting that her concerns run deeper than just politics. She pointed to personal grievances, including her long-standing allegations that Jay-Z attempted to "sabotage" her career through his Roc Nation label. In a previous statement to Time, Minaj characterized Jay-Z as someone who "has accumulated such concentrated power in the industry that many artists have come to resent him."
Given Jay-Z's well-documented friendship and support for the Obama family, Minaj connected these dynamics to her broader critique. "I think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not. Lots of rappers don't like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it," she stated.
Beyond industry concerns, Minaj took issue with Obama's 2024 campaign messaging. She described a particular speech delivered that year as "condescending," specifically objecting to what she interpreted as Obama implying that "Black male voters were uncomfortable making a woman the world's most powerful person."
The artist noted the reaction from within her community, saying, "I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn't like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave. They felt like they weren't being listened to."
Minaj also discussed the timeline of her political shift, revealing when she began privately supporting Donald Trump before eventually making her position public.
