'Obsession' is bucking industry trends at the box office with an extraordinary second-weekend performance.

The indie horror film, marking Curry Barker's directorial debut, grew its earnings rather than declining, a rarity in modern moviegoing. After opening to $16 million, the Focus Features release jumped to $22 million in its second weekend, fueled by strong word-of-mouth and critical reception. The film is projected to add an estimated $28.2 million through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, bringing its North American total to $58.5 million.

The 30% increase represents an unusual trajectory for any film, let alone a horror release. Made on a modest $750,000 budget, 'Obsession' has already cemented its place in box office history as the cheapest film to top the charts in 17 years, a distinction last held by 2009's 'Paranormal Activity.'

Industry observers are positioning the film as a major contender for 2026's horror landscape, with conversations already turning toward potential awards recognition. Lead actress Inde Navarrette has drawn particular acclaim, with numerous critics and outlets singling out her performance as award-worthy caliber.

The film centers on a romantic protagonist (Michael Johnston) who breaks a mysterious artifact known as the "One Wish Willow" to win over his love interest (Navarrette). What begins as wish fulfillment quickly transforms into something far more sinister, as he realizes his deepest desires carry an unexpectedly dark cost.

Barker has indicated openness to developing the property further, suggesting that a sequel remains a possibility should the film's momentum continue.
