Indie Horror Phenomenon 'Obsession' Surpasses $300 Million Globally

'Obsession' shows no signs of slowing down at the box office.

The indie horror sensation, helmed by director Curry Barker, has now surpassed $300 million in global earnings during its sixth weekend in theaters. The film pulled in $14 million domestically and $10.9 million internationally over the latest frame, bringing its cumulative total to $215 million in the U.S. and Canada and $333 million worldwide.

The achievement marks a historic milestone for Focus Features, making 'Obsession' the studio's highest-grossing film to date. It also claims the title of 2026's biggest horror release. Adding to its record-breaking status, the film joins an elite group as the first movie since 1982's 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial' to post consecutive weekend increases outside the holiday moviegoing season.

The film's success has positioned Barker, a 26-year-old former YouTuber-turned-filmmaker, at the forefront of Hollywood's attention. He has inked an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse that will see him write, direct, and produce their next collaboration. This marks his third project with the duo, following 'Obsession' and his already-completed upcoming film 'Anything But Ghosts,' in which he also serves as writer, director, and star.

In recent interviews, Barker addressed the film's portrayal of consent dynamics between characters Bear (Michael Johnston) and Nikki (Inde Navarrette) following a pivotal wish in the story. Looking ahead, the director has indicated he's developed "a cool idea" for a potential sequel to the breakout hit.
