Inde Navarrette Breaks Down 'Obsession' Ending, Reveals Original Death Scene & Sequel Prospects

Inde Navarrette is revealing the secrets behind the finale of her new film 'Obsession'.

The 25-year-old star, who portrays Nikki in the indie horror movie, recently sat down to discuss the film's dramatic ending and what may lie ahead for her character. Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen the film yet.

The psychological horror film, which debuted in theaters on May 15 and currently holds a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows a lovelorn protagonist (Michael Johnston) who breaks a mystical artifact known as the One Wish Willow to capture Nikki's affection, only to discover that fulfilling desires through the wish carries devastating consequences.

Understanding the Film's Conclusion

In the final moments, Bear faces a moment of desperation and swallows a bottle of pills. He reconsiders and attempts to regurgitate them, but the sound of a snapping One Wish Willow signals that Nikki has cast a wish for his love. His expression shifts as he steps outside to greet her with an embrace. However, his body soon convulses and he dies from the pills still in his system—the wish prevented him from successfully purging them. Nikki nearly reaches for a gun in her grief before suddenly snapping back to reality, horrified by the events that have unfolded around her. The film closes on her anguished cries.

Nikki's Fate After the Credits Roll

When discussing what unfolds for Nikki immediately after, Navarrette told THR that her character embarks on a healing journey. She noted that while some joke about Nikki facing legal consequences—since no one believes the wish phenomenon was real—Nikki would likely begin processing her trauma much like anyone would after experiencing such devastation.

Navarrette also shared her emotional reaction upon first encountering the ending at TIFF. She explained that she had deliberately avoided reading scenes featuring only Bear so she could experience the story through Nikki's perspective. When she finally witnessed the twist, she was moved to tears by the tragic irony: Bear transforms from an innocent boy making a desperate wish into someone who realizes the damage he's caused and wants to undo it, only to be stopped by Nikki's own wish for his love.

She praised how director Curry incorporated a last-minute creative choice from Johnston, allowing Bear to attempt throwing up the pills rather than simply accepting his fate. This desperation is what makes Nikki's counteracting wish so devastating—she unknowingly seals his fate in those final seconds.

An Alternate Ending That Almost Was

The actress revealed that the production team considered a drastically different conclusion. Originally, Nikki was meant to take her own life following the trauma and devastation she'd endured. However, last-minute creative instincts led the filmmakers to pivot. During a single take of the new ending, the team felt they'd captured something special and decided to lock that version in place. Navarrette expressed relief and gratitude that her character survived, noting that being considered a horror "final girl" feels like a meaningful achievement.

Could There Be a Sequel?

When asked about returning for a potential follow-up film, Navarrette expressed enthusiasm but also appreciation for the story's contained arc. She compared it to chapters of one's own life—each with clear beginnings and endings—suggesting that while she'd be open to reprising the role, the narrative feels complete as it stands, leaving room for a new version of Nikki should the story ever continue.
