Caitriona Balfe Breaks Down Outlander's Ambiguous Series Finale and Her Own Take on That Cliffhanger

The Outlander series finale left viewers—and star Caitriona Balfe—with plenty of unanswered questions.
After 12 years, the Starz romantic drama wrapped up on Friday, May 15, with an ending that invites interpretation. In the climactic moments, Jamie (Sam Heughan) appears to die after being shot during a battle. Claire then lies beside him, seemingly prepared to join him in death, but then both suddenly open their eyes and gasp for air before the screen cuts to black.
The ambiguous conclusion has sparked widespread speculation about whether the couple survives, whether Jamie has become a ghost, and what exactly unfolds in those final moments.
When discussing the ending with Entertainment Weekly, Balfe was candid about her own confusion. "I don't really know what happened, but I thought it was really cool that they went and did the Jamie ghost thing again, and that in some way, maybe, he was calling her, or he pulled her into his orbit. But as to what happens when they're lying on the stone, I don't know," she said.
Pressed on whether she has personal theories—particularly whether Claire might have resurrected Jamie—Balfe referenced Adawehi's season 4 prophecy, a storyline element that was ultimately cut from the final season. She explained that when she questioned showrunner Matt Roberts about Claire's involvement in what unfolds, his response was straightforward: "It just is what it is."
"I would have loved for it to have been a bit more mystical, and that Claire had more agency in bringing him back. I think in some way, yes, she does. But then it's like, are they alive in this time? Are they alive in a different time? I don't know," Balfe reflected.
The actress revealed her approach to playing those final moments was intentional. "That's how I was sort of playing it. He is her home. It's very Romeo and Juliet, almost, they die together on this altar or this stone. It's what you hope happens in Romeo and Juliet. We get to change the Shakespearean ending," she said.
Earlier in the week on Wednesday, May 13, Balfe and Heughan appeared at a PaleyLive event celebrating the series at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, joined by executive producer Maril Davis and showrunner Matthew Roberts.
