Outlander Showrunner Reveals the Meaning Behind Series Finale's Post-Credits Scene

Fans streaming the Outlander series finale on Starz will want to stick around past the credits—there's a special scene waiting for them.

The beloved time-travel drama concluded after eight seasons spanning 12 years, having transformed lead stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan into major names in the industry. The franchise has also expanded with a prequel series currently airing.

In a recent conversation with EW, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts opened up about the decision to include the post-credits moment. According to Roberts, the scene functions as both a love letter and expression of gratitude to the crew members who have been part of the production since its beginning. "Everybody in the bookstore is someone who had been on the show from day one," he shared, adding that the moment also honors author Diana Gabaldon for creating the world that inspired the series. "We also wanted to say thank you to Diana for creating the world. It's really her story. I thought it was fitting to say thank you to her and give her the last image."

Roberts himself makes an appearance in the scene, though it came about in an unexpected way. "That was funny because we filmed that, and I wasn't. I was talked into doing a walk-through, so we did me on blue screen, and they put me in," he explained of his cameo.

The Outlander finale is now available to stream on Starz.
