Penelope Cruz's 'La Bola Negra' Earns Extraordinary 20-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes

Penelope Cruz's latest project made a powerful impression at this year's Cannes Film Festival, drawing an extended and enthusiastic response from premiere attendees.
The 52-year-old Oscar-winning star premiered her new film La bola negra on Thursday, May 21, at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France. She turned heads in a striking one-shoulder black Chanel gown featuring a dramatic high slit.
Alongside Cruz at the premiere were co-stars Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos Gonzalez, Miguel Bernardeau, Milo Quifes, and Lola Dueñas, as well as co-directors and co-writers Javier Calvó and Javier Ambrossi.
The film explores interconnected narratives spanning three distinct time periods. According to the festival's official description, La bola negra weaves together "the stories of three men in three different eras. Three lives intimately linked by sexuality and desire, pain and inheritance, and one of Federico García Lorca's last, unfinished works."
The premiere audience responded with exceptional enthusiasm, delivering a 20-minute standing ovation that brought the film tantalizingly close to the festival's all-time record. Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth currently holds the distinction, having received a 22-minute ovation when it premiered at Cannes in 2006.
As applause continued to fill the venue, Calvó and Ambrossi addressed the crowd with a pointed statement about their work's themes: "To everyone who thinks that we're gonna step back in our LGBTQ rights, I have bad news!"
In other news involving the acclaimed actress, Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem are set to reunite on screen for an upcoming thriller titled Bunker, which was announced last year.
