ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive nervous system disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition causes loss of muscle control and deteriorates over time. Currently, there is no cure for ALS. While some patients have lived for decades with the disease, the typical survival period following diagnosis ranges from three to five years.
