Queen Camilla's Meeting With J.K. Rowling Draws Swift Online Criticism

Queen Camilla's recent encounter with J.K. Rowling has ignited considerable debate across social media platforms.

The 78-year-old royal posted an image alongside the 60-year-old Harry Potter author following their gathering at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, which centered on Camilla's reading promotion programs for young people.

The official Royal Family X account accompanied the photo with a statement: "With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Her Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations."

The post went live on Tuesday, June 30—the concluding day of Pride Month—prompting predominantly negative responses from online commenters. Rowling's long track record of controversial statements regarding transgender individuals formed the backdrop for much of the criticism.

Several actors from the Harry Potter franchise have previously championed transgender rights, and Rowling has publicly clashed with them on the subject. In April 2025, Rowling issued a statement responding to an open letter signed by dozens of celebrities, including Harry Potter cast members Paapa Essiedu, Eddie Redmayne, and Katie Leung, who opposed a U.K. Supreme Court ruling that determined trans women do not have legal status as women.

"Nobody sane believes, or has ever believed, that humans can change sex, or that binary sex isn't a material fact. These letters do nothing but remind us of what we know only too well: that pretending to believe these things has become an elitist badge of virtue," Rowling wrote in her response shared on X.

Beyond those three, other prominent entertainers including Nicola Coughlan, David Tennant, and Pedro Pascal have also voiced opposition to Rowling's publicly stated positions.
