Randy Jackson's Guest Appearance on American Idol Reunion Draws Fan Attention

Randy Jackson stepped into the role of guest mentor on the May 4, 2026 episode of American Idol, where his presence sparked notable reactions from viewers across social media.
The 69-year-old music industry veteran, who served as one of the show's original judges, worked with the Top 5 contestants during the episode. Observers noted that Jackson remained seated while offering guidance and mentorship, and several fans pointed out that his speaking pace appeared noticeably slower than in previous appearances.
Jackson has been public about his health transformation over the years. In 2022, he reflected on his wellness journey, which included undergoing gastric bypass surgery more than two decades prior following a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. That procedure resulted in a weight loss exceeding 100 pounds.
At that time, Jackson discussed the complexities of maintaining significant weight loss, explaining that while the surgery provided rapid initial results, the real challenge lay in sustaining the changes. "It's a great jump starter. You lose a bunch of weight really fast, but maintaining's another thing because you get there and your mind tells you, 'Okay, phew. I'm here now. I can start to party and bring out the cheesecakes,'" he shared.
More recently, Jackson expressed satisfaction with his long-term progress, noting that his disciplined approach helped him avoid regaining substantial weight. "I think if I had not figured it all out, I would've gained at least half, if not more, of that weight back. And I'm proud to know that we did something that helps me, that helps everyone else, and takes the guesswork out of it for everybody," he said.
The reunion episode also featured five former contestants returning from the 2006 season.
