Chad Smith Channels Will Ferrell in SNL Monologue Opener

The long-running joke about Chad Smith's striking resemblance to Will Ferrell came to life on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer opened Ferrell's monologue by taking the stage as the actor himself, delivering Ferrell's signature hosting remarks. "I'm thrilled to be back hosting Saturday Night Live," Smith said in character. "I was a cast member here for seven years. And now I'm hosting for the sixth time! Amazing, it really feels like coming home."
The bit took a physical turn when the real Ferrell arrived, visibly bewildered by the impersonation. Ferrell launched into a mock complaint about the drummer's antics. "What the hell do you think you're doing? You're not the host. I am!" Ferrell exclaimed. "What the hell is wrong with you? He pushed me down backstage. And I fell, hard. Lorne had to give me mouth-to-mouth. Seriously, what are you even doing here?"
After ejecting Smith from the stage, Ferrell attempted to reset the monologue, telling the audience not to applaud for the drummer. "He's a bad guy," Ferrell deadpanned.
The comedy escalated when Paul McCartney, who was performing as the musical guest, joined in from the audience with a question of his own. "I have a question. What do you think you're doing, Chad?" McCartney asked.
Ferrell maintained his composure, insisting on his identity. "Look, I understand your confusion. Me and Chad do look a lot alike. But I'm Will. I'm hosting tonight."
McCartney wasn't buying it. "Nice try, Chad. Get back. Get back behind the drums where you belong," the legendary musician replied.
Ferrell then rattled off a list of McCartney's songwriting credits spanning the Beatles, Wings, and his solo career, before pivoting to joke about songs McCartney didn't write, including the alphabet song and various pop hits.
"Get your ass behind the drums, Chad," McCartney said in closing.
