Jake Reiner Opens Up About Learning of Parents' Deaths in Emotional Essay

April 23, 2026

Jake Reiner is speaking publicly about the tragic loss of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who died in December 2025. His brother Nick, 32, has been arrested and charged in connection with their deaths.

In an emotional Substack piece released Friday, Jake, 34, recounted the harrowing moment he discovered what had happened. He was attending a memorial service for a close friend, Christian Anderson, at Union Station on December 14 when his sister Romy called with the devastating news. His father had been killed, she told him. Minutes later, another call came—his mother was also gone.

"The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed," Jake wrote, describing how he entered a state of shock during the drive to his childhood home to reach his sister.

Jake reflected on the terror his parents must have experienced during their final moments, emphasizing that they were undeserving of such a fate. "They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world," he expressed.

The 34-year-old acknowledged that his account represents his personal perspective, allowing his sister Romy, 28, to share her own story in her own time.

Jake outlined the profound losses he will experience moving forward—his parents will not attend his wedding, meet their grandchildren, or witness his career achievements. "It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me," he wrote.

He described his parents as the bedrock of his identity and the most generous people he has known, noting their unconditional love for their three children and their exemplary marriage. "The love they have for each other in their marriage is something I always looked up to as the standard of what a successful relationship looks like," he shared.

Since their deaths, Jake and Romy have been navigating an overwhelming process of grief complicated by legal and administrative demands. "Every day since then has been horrendous. Every meeting we take, every person we talk to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to our parents being murdered," he explained, describing how the machinery of paperwork and decision-making intrudes on the grieving process.

The loss is compounded by an additional layer of trauma, Jake noted. "We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable. Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it," he wrote.

Nick pleaded not guilty during his court appearance in February.
