Robby Hoffman Opens Up About Her Stage Name Choice

Robby Hoffman recently sat down with How God Works podcast host Dave DeSteno to discuss the origins of her stage name, shedding light on a decision that has shaped her comedy career.

Born Rivka Sarah, the 36-year-old Hacks star explained that when she first entered the comedy world, her given name posed significant challenges. During open mics and interactions with other comedians, she found that "Rivka" was difficult for people to pronounce. Rather than constantly correcting others, she decided it was time for a change.

In developing her stage name, Hoffman sought something that would feel familiar and personal. She kept the "R" initial as a nod to her roots while selecting "Hoffman" as her surname, creating the moniker fans know today.

Not everyone supported the decision. Her mother expressed disapproval, questioning why her daughter would abandon such a meaningful name. "Rivka's such a beautiful name, what are you ashamed?" her mother asked. Hoffman recalled responding with humor, saying, "I said, 'Ma, you think within three seconds of me being on stage, they're like, 'I wonder if she's Catholic?' Whether I want to or not...."

Hoffman grew up in Brooklyn, New York, raised by a single mother in a Hasidic Jewish household alongside nine siblings. She has spoken openly about her background and has described herself as "very Jewish and very gay" in past interviews.

Stage name changes remain commonplace throughout the entertainment industry. Rob McElhenney, known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, changed his name to Rob Mac last year, while actresses like Emma Stone have similarly discussed their decisions to adopt different professional names.
