Robert Eggers Brings Werewolf Horror to the Screen with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe

Focus Features is gearing up for a major holiday release with Robert Eggers' latest horror venture. The studio revealed the first official glimpse of Werwulf on Thursday, June 25, ahead of its December 25 theatrical debut.

The film marks another collaboration between Eggers and his Nosferatu stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, with Willem Dafoe rounding out the cast. Eggers both wrote and directed the project alongside co-writer Sjón, who previously partnered with the filmmaker on The Northman.

Focus Features describes the film as "a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within," positioning it as Eggers' most visceral and haunting work to date. The director has emphasized that his vision deliberately sidesteps the traditional werewolf movie playbook.

In an interview with Esquire, Eggers explained his approach to the material. He noted that after completing Nosferatu, he wanted to make another horror film but sought to avoid overly obscure territory. "I thought, Let me be sensible and make a werewolf movie," he said with a laugh, adding that his relocation to the UK influenced his decision to set the story there.

Eggers stressed that his mythology deliberately strips away familiar werewolf tropes. "All the clichés of being bitten by a werewolf and silver bullets and a lot of the stuff that has become almost campy doesn't exist in the mythology of this movie," he explained. "You don't need to have seen Lon Cheney Jr.'s The Wolf Man or An American Werewolf in London to get what's going on here."

The director emphasized the importance of maintaining mystery throughout the horror experience. "Part of this being a horror movie is that it's about mystery and suspense and the slow-burn, uncomfortable vibes that lead us into darkness and ultimately horror. I think the less we know, the better," he said.

Taylor-Johnson recently appeared in the limited release of Fuze this past April.
