Rudy Giuliani Leaves ICU, Continues Recovery in Hospital Following Pneumonia Battle

The 81-year-old former New York City mayor has moved out of intensive care as he recuperates from a serious bout of pneumonia, his representatives announced Wednesday.
Giuliani was admitted to a Florida hospital over the weekend in stable but critical condition with pneumonia. The situation grew dire on May 4 when his physician, Dr. Maria Ryan, disclosed to Fox News that his health had deteriorated rapidly enough to warrant a priest administering last rites while he remained in the ICU.
By Wednesday, May 6, his spokesperson Ted Goodman shared encouraging news about his status. "Mayor Rudy Giuliani is out of the ICU and will spend some time recovering before leaving the hospital," Goodman wrote on social media. "The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way."
Goodman highlighted Giuliani's resilience, noting his past achievements and his determination to overcome his current health crisis. "Mayor Giuliani—the man who took down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran toward the towers on September 11th—is the same fighter he's always been, and he's winning this fight," the statement read. "The power of prayer is working. The mayor feels it. We feel it. Please keep them coming for America's Mayor, Rudy Giuliani."
The pneumonia diagnosis has been complicated by long-term health effects stemming from his response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. According to Goodman, Giuliani developed restrictive airway disease after running toward the towers to assist those in need that day. This underlying condition significantly worsened his respiratory illness, which progressed to the point where mechanical ventilation became necessary to maintain adequate oxygen levels and stabilize his condition.
This hospitalization marks the second time in less than a year that Giuliani has required medical care. He previously spent time in a hospital in August 2025 following serious injuries sustained in a car accident.
