Ryan Lochte Clarifies Engagement Timing Amid Ongoing Divorce Proceedings

Ryan Lochte has weighed in on the timing of his engagement announcement, which came while his divorce from Kayla Rae Reid remains officially incomplete.

The 41-year-old Olympic swimmer took to Instagram to explain the circumstances surrounding his proposal to Molly Gillihan. "Correction: Apparently I'm not allowed to say I'm divorced until every signature is in place," Lochte wrote. "So, while we've reached an agreement, the judge hasn't officially signed off yet. My mistake for thinking the hard part was over."

He continued, sharing that both he and Gillihan are prepared for what lies ahead. "Molly and I are realizing this may just be the beginning of a very tough and exhausting road. Prayers appreciated while we navigate this new reality. It seems someone wants to make sure this chapter isn't quite done with me yet."

Reid responded on her own Instagram Story, confirming her current marital status. "It's so funny. You know, I blocked certain people over a year ago so I don't see anything these said people say or do. You guys just like to inform me unfortunately," she said, before referencing a recent court hearing.

"It was funny because during the hearing, the judge under oath had to ask…somebody…just to clarify they were still legally married. And this said person had to say 'yes,'" Reid explained. She added that while still officially married, she is nearing the completion of the divorce process. "I'm not divorced yet. I'm close."

Lochte proposed to Gillihan at Prime and Pearl in Gainesville, Florida—the same restaurant where the couple had their first date.
