Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve's 'Fjord' Takes Home Palme d'Or at Cannes, Continuing Neon's Dominant Streak

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival crowned a new champion on Saturday evening, as Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve's drama Fjord earned cinema's most prestigious honor—the Palme d'Or.
Stan and Reinsve took the stage alongside director Cristian Mungiu during the closing ceremony held in Cannes, France on May 23 to accept the award. Tilda Swinton presented the prize, striking a striking figure in a red Chanel gown.
For Mungiu, the victory represents his second Palme d'Or win. He previously claimed the top prize in 2007 for his directorial debut, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Fjord also marks a significant milestone in his career as his first feature shot in English and Norwegian—a departure from his previous work conducted entirely in Romanian.
The film has already garnered strong critical reception, holding a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes since its festival premiere.
Fjord follows the Gheorghiu family, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate to a remote village nestled in a fjord and develop a close relationship with their neighbors, the Halbergs. The children of both families form bonds despite their contrasting upbringings. Complications arise when adolescent Elia Gheorghiu arrives at school with visible bruises, prompting the community to consider whether the Gheorghius' traditional parenting methods might be responsible.
While the film has not yet secured a wide theatrical release date, industry expectations point toward a late 2026 debut in cinemas.
The victory adds another chapter to Neon's remarkable run at Cannes. Fjord marks the studio's seventh consecutive Palme d'Or win—an unprecedented achievement in the festival's history. The distributor previously took home the award with Parasite (2019), Titane (2021), Triangle of Sadness (2022), Anatomy of a Fall (2023), Anora (2024), and It Was Just an Accident (2025).
