Survivor 49 Champion Breaks Down Tax Hit on $1 Million Grand Prize

Savannah Louie, the champion of Survivor's 49th season, is sharing details about the financial reality of winning the competition's top prize.
During an appearance on the Financial Tea with Mrs. Dow Jones podcast, Louie discussed how taxes significantly reduced her $1 million winnings. The contestant paid $380,000 in taxes on the prize, a figure that left her stunned.
"It was like a punch to the gut, because that's more money than I have ever made in a year, by far," Louie explained. "To sign a check over, essentially, for that high, it was unreal. It hurts."
Her status as a Georgia resident worked in her favor. Louie noted that residents in other states would face an even steeper tax bill on the same prize amount.
The payout process involves a built-in delay to protect confidentiality. CBS holds the prize money until after the finale airs to prevent winners from violating non-disclosure agreements. Since Louie and the cast knew the outcome while it remained secret from production, the network uses the financial incentive as insurance against leaks.
"We have to wait until the finale airs, though, before we get that payout," Louie said. The season's finale aired in December, and she received the full $1 million deposit less than 24 hours after it broadcast.
"With Survivor, there are NDAs in place [because] I know who the winner is, our cast knows who the winner is, but production doesn't want that to get out," she explained. "So, they have that check at the end of the day that's kind of looming."
