Tara Lipinski Opens Up About Surrogate's Second Trimester Loss

Tara Lipinski is revealing heartbreaking news about her family's fertility journey.

The 43-year-old Olympic figure skater took to Instagram on May 1 to share that her surrogate experienced a second trimester loss during what would have been her and husband Todd Kapostasy's second child. The announcement came just hours after the couple revealed they were pursuing another pregnancy.

In an emotional post, Lipinski explained her hesitation about going public with the news. "I didn't think I was ready to share this yet," she wrote, describing how difficult it can be to discuss such losses, especially in the public eye. She recalled being on a plane returning from Washington, D.C., where she had been advocating for IVF accessibility on Capitol Hill, when she realized she needed to speak openly about her experience.

"A few months ago, we lost our baby in the second trimester," Lipinski shared, detailing the obstacles she and Kapostasy have faced. The couple's first surrogate, who carried their daughter Georgie in October 2023, was not medically cleared to continue with their plans for a second child. After beginning their second surrogacy journey, they encountered a series of setbacks: complications finding a new surrogate, medical clearance issues, a failed embryo transfer, and ultimately the pregnancy loss.

Lipinski expressed deep gratitude for both surrogates involved in their journey. "I feel incredibly lucky for the woman who carried our baby (our angel) who will always hold such a special place in my heart," she wrote, adding that their first surrogate has continued offering support throughout the process.

The figure skater reflected on the profound impact of the loss. "A second trimester loss was devastating," she noted, describing how certain moments from medical appointments remain vivid and difficult to process. She also extended compassion to others navigating similar experiences, writing, "My heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth. You are warriors."

Lipinski emphasized the importance of sharing personal struggles, particularly when advocating for reproductive healthcare access. "Reading so many of your stories has reminded me how important it is to share—even when it's hard. Especially when it's hard," she concluded.
