Taylor Sheridan Discusses Kevin Costner's Departure from Yellowstone and the Actor's Extended Stay

Taylor Sheridan has offered rare insight into Kevin Costner's exit from Yellowstone, discussing the circumstances surrounding the actor's departure midway through season five, which resulted in his character's death.
During an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, the 56-year-old series creator, writer, and executive producer revealed that Costner's original contract stipulated his involvement would end after the first three seasons. "That was in his contract. In my mind, that's when his youngest son takes over [on the show]," Sheridan explained.
However, network concerns about losing such a prominent star prompted Costner to extend his tenure. "The network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready," Sheridan noted. "He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do, but he stayed on for another two seasons."
The decision to keep Costner on board reflected the show's extraordinary commercial success. "It was such a behemoth" and "such a huge hit," Sheridan said, explaining the reluctance to let go of the property before its peak. "The notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network."
The show's cultural dominance extended to distribution negotiations, with cable companies seeking guaranteed seasons of Yellowstone as part of carriage agreements. "There was even pressure from some of the cable companies wanting to put it in their deals, that they were going to get an X-number of seasons of Yellowstone to re-up what this cable company is. That's the power of a really big hit show," Sheridan explained.
Ultimately, Costner pursued his own projects, including his film Horizon. The splitting of season five into two parts further complicated scheduling, contributing to his eventual departure from the series.
