Ted Danson Opens Up About Recent Health Scare, Reflects on Mortality

Ted Danson is getting candid about a recent brush with health concerns that shifted his outlook on life.
During an appearance on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name on Wednesday (May 6), the 78-year-old Emmy-winning actor sat down with actress Valerie Bertinelli and discussed the medical episode.
"I had a bit of a health scare," the Cheers veteran explained. "I'm totally fine, but it was like, 'Oh, that's real.'"
The actor emphasized that the incident came as an unexpected jolt. "I hadn't f–ked up in some way," he noted, explaining that the health scare arrived without warning.
Danson said the experience proved grounding. "It was very humbling and calming, and I'm fine," he assured listeners. "I think it was the best thing that could have happened to me, and I'm doing some things differently."
The Good Place star reflected on the broader implications of facing his own mortality. "Mortality is the real deal, you know. It's not just a rumor. Ted Danson doesn't get a free pass," he said with characteristic humor.
Since the health scare, Danson has made meaningful lifestyle adjustments. He and his wife Mary Steenburgen now meditate together twice daily—a practice he credits with providing valuable perspective.
The meditation habit has reinforced an important realization for the actor. "What it's done for me, the biggest gift of all: You can be curious about other people," Danson reflected. "You can listen, you can be supportive, caring, you can witness them. And I do believe that the rest of my life is to be curious and listen. That's the best thing I can offer."
