Netflix Cancels 'The Boroughs' After One Season Despite Strong Reviews

Netflix has opted not to continue with 'The Boroughs,' the sci-fi thriller from executive producers the Duffer Brothers, ending the show after just one season.

The decision comes as a surprise given that a writers room had already been established for season two, with discussions underway about potentially shooting two additional seasons consecutively. According to reports, the cancellation marks an unexpected turn for the series.

Viewership numbers tell part of the story: the show pulled in 9.5 million views during its debut week on the platform, though that figure dropped to 3.7 million in the following week.

Critical reception, however, was strong. The series earned a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 79% audience rating.

The ensemble cast included Hollywood veterans Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman, alongside Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg, Ed Begley Jr., Dee Wallace, Eric Edelstein, Rafael Casal, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Beth Bailey, Karan Soni, and Jane Kaczmarek.

Set in a sun-drenched New Mexico retirement community called The Boroughs, the series follows Sam Cooper, a newcomer who discovers something sinister lurking beneath the community's idyllic facade. When local authorities dismiss his warnings, Sam teams up with an eclectic group of residents—a former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a music manager, and a resourceful doctor—to uncover the dark secrets threatening their home.

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews served as the show's creators, showrunners, and executive producers, with the Duffer Brothers joining them in an executive producer capacity.
