The Devil Wears Prada 2: How the Sequel Unfolds with a Shocking Betrayal

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has arrived in theaters with a fresh perspective on the magazine and fashion worlds, exploring how artificial intelligence and modern technology are reshaping the industry in 2026.
Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci reunite for the sequel, which takes place two decades after the original film. Here's what happens to their characters in this latest chapter.
Setting Up the Conflict
Twenty years have passed since the events of the first film. Andy has built a career as a respected journalist, but her professional trajectory takes a sharp turn when she becomes a victim of a highly publicized job layoff. Meanwhile, Runway Magazine finds itself embroiled in scandal after Miranda approves a controversial article about fast fashion that sparks significant public backlash.
Seeking to restore the publication's credibility, Elias-Clarke chairman Irv Ravitz brings Andy on board as the new features editor—a decision that visibly frustrates Miranda. Working alongside Miranda, Andy helps rebuild trust with the magazine's key advertisers, including luxury fashion house Dior, where Emily now serves as an executive. One of Andy's major coups is securing an exclusive interview with billionaire Sasha Barnes, played by Lucy Liu.
The Turning Point
Miranda's trajectory seems set for advancement when she's tapped to become Head of Global Content across all Elias-Clarke publications. However, the death of Irv at his birthday celebration disrupts these plans. His son Jay, portrayed by BJ Novak, assumes control but lacks his father's strategic vision. Jay begins pushing for substantial budget reductions to the magazine.
While attending Milan Fashion Week, Andy devises a strategy to preserve Runway. She partners with Emily to execute the plan, but the collaboration masks Emily's true intentions.
The Betrayal
Emily, now romantically involved with billionaire Benji Barnes (Justin Theroux), works with him to purchase Runway. Andy believes the acquisition will protect the magazine and keep Miranda at the helm. The reality proves far different—Emily has orchestrated Miranda's removal so she can assume editorial control.
The deception unravels when Andy learns the truth from Miranda, who has already pieced together Emily's scheme. It emerges that Miranda had previously terminated Emily's position at Runway, believing she lacked the necessary capabilities. Notably, Miranda herself facilitated Emily's move to Dior years earlier.
Resolution
To counter the hostile takeover, Andy launches an intensive effort to find an alternative buyer. Following Miranda's guidance, she spends the day contacting potential investors to block Benji's acquisition.
The solution arrives when Sasha, Benji's former wife, steps forward with an offer to purchase the entire Elias-Clarke company. She subsequently appoints Miranda as Head of Global Content—the exact position Irv had originally intended for her.
With the magazine secured, Nigel discloses to Andy that he recommended her hiring to Irv years ago, having monitored her career trajectory throughout their time apart. Miranda also finally acknowledges to Andy that she always recognized her potential for success, despite initially feigning ignorance when they reconnected.
Andy receives a more prestigious office space as recognition of her contributions. Emily and Benji end their relationship, after which Emily reinvents herself with a new blonde look and accepts a position at Coach. The friendship between Emily and Andy is ultimately restored.
