How 'The Neighborhood' Wrapped Up Eight Seasons: Series Finale Recap

The Neighborhood brought its eight-season journey to a close on Monday night, May 11, with a finale that marked significant transitions for the show's core families.
The CBS comedy, which debuted in 2018, centered on the relationship between Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer), the de facto neighborhood patriarch living in Pasadena with his wife Tina (Tichina Arnold), and their neighboring family, Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield), Gemma (Beth Behrs), and their teenage son Grover (Hank Greenspan). Calvin and Tina also shared their home with their two grown sons, Malcolm and Marty.
The final episode's centerpiece was a dual wedding ceremony where Malcolm and Marty each tied the knot. Marty married his coworker Courtney (Skye Townsend), while Malcolm exchanged vows with Mercedes (Amber Stevens West).
As the weddings approached, Tina grappled with the emotional weight of her sons' next chapter, expressing concern about the empty nest ahead. She told Calvin: "Everything is changing. We're about to start a whole new chapter in our lives. It's going to be okay when it's just the two of us, right?" Calvin reframed the moment positively, responding: "Babe, you're looking at this all wrong. We're not losing our kids — we're gaining more of each other. We can do whatever, because we are Calvin and Tina Butler."
The finale also showcased the evolution of Calvin and Dave's friendship. Despite initial friction between them, Calvin delivered an emotional toast acknowledging the transformation. "I'm going to have to keep it real, y'all. I wasn't feeling Dave at first. But since I am keeping it real, I have to say that you turned out to be a great neighbor. And a good friend," he said, calling Dave his "best friend." Grover, though initially hesitant about the move, ultimately accepted his family's relocation decision.
The Johnsons' departure marked another turning point. In the episode's closing moments, as Dave and Gemma packed up their Pasadena home, Dave presented Calvin with a jar containing his kombucha base, known as SCOBY. "Mother is far too delicate to make the trip. But now you can make your own 'booch,' and a piece of me will always be in your gut," he explained.
When Gemma offered to return their spare key, Calvin refused, with Tina assuring the Johnsons: "Our door is always open. This neighborhood will always be your home."
The final moments revealed that the Johnsons' house had already been purchased by new residents. As the Butlers stood in the empty home, Tina looked ahead with optimism: "The neighborhood will never be the same. You ready to meet the new neighbors?" Calvin, still processing the change, admitted he needed time to adjust: "I'm gonna need a minute. I'm not ready to break in a new Dave."
