Tristan Thompson Pursues Limited Conservatorship of 19-Year-Old Brother Amari

April 27, 2026

Tristan Thompson has moved to establish a limited conservatorship over his younger brother Amari, age 19. The 35-year-old basketball player submitted the necessary legal documentation on Monday, April 27, as reported by People.

Thompson assumed legal guardianship of Amari in 2023 after their mother passed away. Amari lives with severe disabilities that significantly impact his daily functioning and independence.

According to the filed documents, Amari "suffers from an intellectual disability and developmental delay and is unable to take care of his personal needs." The paperwork further notes that he "is unable to live independently and relies on" Thompson for care. Additionally, Amari lacks the capacity to manage any financial matters independently due to his condition.

The filing indicates that Amari "does not object to the proposed conservator" and has expressed no desire to challenge the conservatorship arrangement.

Khloe Kardashian, Thompson's ex-partner, recently discussed the family's caregiving situation on her podcast Khloe In Wonderland. She explained that Amari has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy, and is unable to walk or speak.

"He's never been able to talk," Kardashian shared on the podcast. She noted that Thompson's demanding NBA schedule with the Cleveland Cavaliers makes it impractical for Amari to travel frequently. "He is in a different state literally every other day or every few days, and it's just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes," she said.

Amari experiences multiple seizures daily as a result of his condition. Kardashian emphasized that Amari remains in Los Angeles under her care to ensure stability. "Amari stays in LA with me, and I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him, because it's not good that he travel," she explained.

Kardashian also expressed her affection for her role in Amari's life, stating that she loves "having Amari be a part of my family."
