Tucker Carlson Expresses Regret Over Supporting Trump, Says He Bears Responsibility for President's Actions

April 20, 2026

Former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson has publicly acknowledged his role in Donald Trump's return to the presidency, expressing remorse about the consequences that have unfolded since the 79-year-old took office.

The commentary comes amid a significant rift between Trump and several longtime conservative supporters who have distanced themselves from him in recent weeks, following his decision to launch military action in Iran. In response, the president has lashed out at his former allies through social media, using harsh language to describe them as "low IQ" and "losers, just trying to latch on to MAGA."

Carlson found himself in Trump's crosshairs after characterizing the president's profanity-laden Easter statement about Iran—in which Trump threatened to send the nation to hell—as "vile."

On the April 20 episode of The Tucker Carlson Show, Carlson sat down with his brother Buckley Carlson, a former speechwriter for Trump, to discuss their involvement in the president's political rise. Tucker acknowledged the weight of that participation, saying he and his brother, along with millions of others who supported Trump, are fundamentally connected to what is currently happening.

"You wrote speeches for him, I campaigned for him. I mean, we're implicated in this for sure. It's not enough to say, 'Well, I changed my mind.' Or like, 'Oh, this is bad. I'm out.' It's like in very small ways, but in real ways, you and me and millions of people like us are the reason this is happening right now," Carlson reflected.

He went on to suggest that accepting this responsibility requires introspection and accountability. "So I do think it's like a moment to wrestle with our own consciences. You know, we'll be tormented by it for a long time. I will be, and I want to say I'm sorry for misleading people. It was not intentional. That's all I'll say."

Carlson then questioned whether Trump's current behavior had been predictable, noting that while there were observable character flaws, many people with similar issues have managed to perform better than their personal shortcomings would suggest.

Buckley Carlson echoed his brother's concerns, stating that virtually everyone in their circles feels betrayed and distressed about the situation. "I don't know a single person who doesn't feel betrayed, left behind, upset, hostile, freaked out about the consequences of this. I mean, it's not a small thing that we've done," he said.
