Trump Criticizes Press Corps Over Iran Military Campaign, Dismisses Questions on Timeline and Nuclear Weapons

April 23, 2026

President Trump faced sharp questioning from the media during a press conference regarding his military campaign in Iran, responding with pointed criticism of journalists who pressed him on the operation's evolving timeline and strategic details.

The 79-year-old president came under scrutiny over his shifting estimates for the conflict's duration. After initially suggesting the military action would conclude within four to six weeks following its launch in late February, the operation has extended beyond that window without yielding a peace agreement.

When asked about his willingness to wait for negotiations to produce results, Trump drew comparisons to America's historical military engagements. "Don't rush me," he stated. "We were in Vietnam for 18 years. We were in Iraq for many, many years. We're in for… I don't like to say World War II because that was a biggie. But we were four and a half, almost five years in World War II. We were in the Korean War for seven years."

Trump emphasized the speed of his current operation relative to these precedents. "I've been doing this for six weeks, and their military is totally defeated," he said.

The president attributed delays in achieving a resolution to internal instability within Iran. "They have all new leadership, and they're fighting like cats and dogs for who's going to control because we've created a real mess for them," he explained. He added that Iran's leadership had created regional turmoil over decades, noting the toll on American military personnel.

Regarding ceasefire negotiations, Trump characterized the talks as an opportunity to resolve tensions within Iran's government structure.

When pressed about his message to Americans expressing concern over the prolonged fighting, Trump turned critical of the reporter. "Such a disgrace," he said, before repeating his earlier comparison about Vietnam's duration.

Later in the exchange, Trump labeled another journalist a "wise guy" and cut off his line of questioning.

A reporter's question about potential nuclear weapons deployment drew particular irritation from the president. "We don't need it. Why do I need it? Why would a stupid question like that be asked? Why would I use a nuclear weapon when we've totally, in a very conventional way, decimated them without it?" Trump responded. He added that nuclear weapons should never be deployed by any nation.

Trump also suggested he could conclude the conflict immediately if desired. "If I left right now, we had a tremendous success. It would take them 20 years to rebuild. But I don't want to do that. I want to have it everlasting. I want to have it where they never have a chance to get it," he stated.
