Trump Discusses Fitness Habits, Engages in Playful Exchange with RFK Jr. at White House Athletic Event

The 79-year-old president took center stage Tuesday at a White House gathering celebrating athletic achievement, using the occasion to weigh in on his own physical conditioning while sparring good-naturedly with his health secretary.
During remarks announcing the revival of the Presidential Physical Fitness Award—a fitness assessment program set to return to schools—Trump peppered his speech with references to his personal exercise regimen. "I work out so much, like about one minute a day max if I'm lucky," he quipped while introducing the event, framing it as a celebration of American athletic traditions and physical fitness.
The lighthearted moment set the tone for what became a more pointed exchange later in the proceedings. When RFK Jr., serving as secretary of health and human services, took the microphone, he recounted how his father Robert F. Kennedy had once completed a demanding 50-mile hike to demonstrate the fitness level of President John F. Kennedy's Cabinet members. RFK Jr. noted that his father was the sole finisher of that challenge.
Drawing a comparison to the current administration, RFK Jr. suggested things might be different now. "We have a bunch of thoroughbreds on this Cabinet," he said, naming Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, Linda McMahon, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. "There's a lot of people who could probably do a 50-mile hike."
Trump interjected: "What about me. You didn't mention my name. I could do it."
RFK Jr. responded by noting that Trump "walks nine miles a day on a golf course every weekend." Trump countered with candor: "When I'm not using a cart."
During interactions with young athletes in attendance, Trump asked one boy about his sports background. The teenager mentioned playing football but expressed interest in pursuing powerlifting. After commenting that the young man looked strong, Trump posed an unusual question: "You think you could take me in a fight?"
The event brought together young athletes and others to mark the return of the fitness award program to American schools.
