Trump Signs Legislation to End 76-Day DHS Shutdown Following House Passage

A record-breaking 76-day shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has come to an end.

The House approved legislation on Thursday, April 30, that the Senate had previously passed, providing funding for the federal agency. President Trump signed the bill into law that same afternoon.

The legislation funds key agencies including the Secret Service, Coast Guard, and Transportation Security Administration through September. However, it does not allocate new funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement or Border Patrol, as reported by NBC News, amid ongoing calls for immigration enforcement reform and protests surrounding ICE-related deaths in 2026.

In March, Trump agreed to sign an executive order ensuring payment for TSA agents as airports nationwide experienced extended wait times and operational disruptions. The president cautioned that emergency DHS funding would have depleted by the end of the week without intervention.

"We were not going to have lines at TSA. Everybody will get their paychecks now," House Speaker Mike Johnson stated following the vote, according to BBC reporting.

A day prior, the House had advanced a budget resolution aimed at funding ICE and border patrol operations, which has already cleared the Senate.

"We got the budget resolution passed. This is very, very important, because that will ensure that border security and immigration enforcement will continue today and well into the future.…Democrats got absolutely nothing for their political charade and shenanigans out of them," Johnson said via NBC News.
