Kevin Costner's 'Horizon: Chapter 2' Remains Without a Release Date Following Box Office Setback

Kevin Costner's ambitious western saga continues to find new viewers now that 'Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1' has landed on Amazon Prime Video, introducing the film to audiences nearly two years after its theatrical release.

The project was originally conceived as a four-film saga, with plans to release the first two installments in rapid succession. Chapter 1 hit theaters on June 28, 2024, while Chapter 2 was scheduled to arrive on August 16, 2024.

The box office performance of the first film prompted a change in strategy. With Chapter 1 earning just $29 million domestically and $38 million globally, New Line Cinema made the decision to postpone Chapter 2's release. The studio announced the delay on July 10, 2024.

"Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max. We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run," the studio stated.

Territory Pictures echoed the sentiment in their own statement, emphasizing their commitment to building an audience for the first chapter before moving forward with the sequel.

"The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2," the production company said.

Chapter 2 made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and was later screened at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 7, 2025. A theatrical release date for the sequel has not been set.

Despite the delays, Costner remains committed to expanding the franchise. In November 2024, he told Deadline about his efforts to secure financing for future installments: "I'm hoping, I'm dreaming, I'm meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they're all hiding in the shadows."
