White House Correspondents' Dinner Disrupted by Shooting; Trump Pledges Rescheduling
The 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner came to an abrupt halt on Saturday night after gunfire erupted near the Washington Hilton ballroom, prompting the immediate evacuation of President Trump and other attendees.
The 79-year-old President was removed from the stage following the incident and transported to a secure location within the hotel before being returned to the White House. The event, which marked Trump's first attendance as President, was subsequently called off.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the cancellation and outlined plans to reschedule. "Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately. I will be giving a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House Press Briefing Room," he wrote. "The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days."
According to reports, the gunman was identified as a 30-year-old male from California. A Secret Service agent was struck during the incident, with the bullet hitting protective gear. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Initial reports indicated four shots were fired in the lobby area of the Washington Hilton, though additional gunfire was also reported by witnesses at the scene.
